So Kali and I returned home maybe 40 or so minutes ago from seeing the newest episode from upcoming season of Southland. The special guest for tonight was Michael Cudlitz who plays officer John Cooper.
First let's begin with me stepping out of the shower...NO... just kidding.
Season two starts off a few days after the amazing finale from the first. We find Russel on a gurney, Lydia dealing with the idea of a new partner, Ben finally reaching his six months probationary period, John still going for the ride, (his back feels fine mind you) and everyone else still trying to deal with the problems that carry over.
Why I LOVE this show is the fact that it puts an interesting twist on the detective stories that have fascinated humanity since tales of Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie. It stays pretty close to reality and develops the ensemble characters slowly but triumphantly, allowing the audience to grow with them as new situations arise. It's truly a gem of a TV show.
The cinematography work is fantastic as well, blending traditional narrative story telling style w/ that of verite causing the audience to become involved in the scene. Think of NYPD Blue meets Cops. It's fantastic! There was a shot where Officer Ben Sherman runs out of his squad car to pursue a suspect on foot, and the camera follows them seamlessly keeping up and even squeezing through a small gate opening (almost typed gay opening tee hee) causing me too (silently) gasp. Shots such as this always make me tickle inside.
Even though I wish we could have a little more saucy character revelations... (cough) it was over all a fantastic pick-up from season 1. It quickly set up the premise for the second season to unfold with room to go anywhere. (Much like real life does...seriously) Still, you should have heard the crowd in this probably 200 seating room.
Of course with Michael @Cudlitz (twitter) came out the crowd cheered and enjoyed him. He had fantastic charisma and really cared about answering the audience's questions. Even stayed to chat, photo opp, and sign autographs at the end, before

So Coo dos to TNT for picking up SouthLAnd after NBC Epic Failed and dropped it. This one is certainly for the ages!
